I took my second-year elementary school exam in 1975
Socialism then was like the universe: expanding
The teacher asked me about Maximilien Robespierre
I answered that The Jacobins were right and that,
Terror or not, the French Revolution was the right
thing to do.
The teacher did not ask me any further.
But we have also other memories of that Old-fashioned World
Fogazzaro:
-the three-hundred points spaceship in Space Invaders
-Enrico Berlinguer on tv
-the Olympic victories of Alberto Juantorena
in the name of the Cuban Revolution
-the Sandinists at the power in Nicaragua
-the catechis voting for Pannella
-my friends passing directly from Marlboro
to heroin, despite light drugs
-the comics of Zora the porn vampire and the no-return Prinz
-the referendum on divorce and we couldn't understand why
if the "No" won, divorce would be law and if the "yes" won, not
-Anna Oxa at Sanremo dressed as a London punk
-Van Halen
-the first jerk off
-our neighbour, a crossdresser named Lola that
our mother used to call Antonio, astonishing us
-Jarmila Kratochivilova
-Toblerone, somebody knows why
-a writing by Reggiana's ultras after the american
air raid on Tripoli in the eighties
stating: "thanks Reagan, please bomb Parma!"
-and our amazing toponimy:
Karl Marx street
Ho Chi Min street
Che Guevara street
Dolores Ibarruri street
Stalingrad street
Marshal Tito street
Lenin square in Cavriago
and the big bank, not local anymore, in
October Revolution street
-and last my neighbourhood, where the Communist Party
was at 74% and the Christian Democrats at 6%
